The connection of vṛ́ṣan etc. with this root is questionable; and yet more that of varṣman V.+, varṣimán VS., várṣīyas V.+, várṣiṣṭha V.+, all of which may come from an aoristically extended form of √ 1 vṛ (like párṣiṣṭha etc. from √ 2 pṛ).

 

Meanings

várṣati várṣate v PPP vṛṣṭá (q.v.) rain (either pers. w. Parjanya, Indra, etc. as subj., or impers.), pour down, shed or cover with (I); L varṣati while it is raining. Caus. varṣáyati cause to rain or let fall down as rain; sprinkle or cover with (I).
